Why a photo saved as PNG is so much bigger

PNG is lossless: every pixel is stored exactly, with no information discarded. That is ideal for screenshots, logos, and diagrams with sharp edges and flat colors — but a photographic image contains noise and gradients that lossless storage preserves at full cost. A phone photo saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same photo encoded as JPEG at a normal quality setting, even though the two look identical on screen at normal zoom.

Converting to JPEG is therefore the single biggest size reduction you can make on a photo-type PNG, and it is safe whenever the image has no transparency — JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are flattened to white during conversion. If you need to keep transparency, stay with PNG output (or check whether the recipient accepts WebP viathe WebP converter).

After upload, the editor opens with JPEG output pre-selected. Turn on Target Sizeif the destination states a byte limit — the encoder binary-searches quality until the file fits, so a 12 MB screenshot can land under 200 KB in one run. The200KB preset page shows that workflow end to end, andresizing to exact dimensions helps when the form also constrains pixel size. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Convert questions

PNG to JPG FAQ

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Upload your .png below — the editor opens with JPEG output pre-selected. Use Target Size (e.g. 200 KB) to hit form limits, then download.

Why is my PNG so large?

PNG is lossless — great for screenshots and graphics, terrible for photos. A phone photo saved as PNG can be 5–10× larger than the same photo as JPEG quality 80.

Will transparency survive?

No — JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent areas become white (or black depending on the decoder). Keep PNG output if you need transparency.
