WebP stores the same photo in roughly 25–35% fewer bytes at comparable visual quality, which makes it a good default for websites, blogs, and anywhere you control the upload pipeline. It supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency, so it can replace JPEG and PNG in most modern contexts.
The catch is the receiving end, not the format. Many uploaders — job portals, exam registration systems, banking KYC screens, older content-management systems — validate the file extension and reject anything that isn't .jpg. If a form says "JPEG only", converting in the wrong direction will just get you rejected at upload. In that case use the reverse tool:convert WebP to JPG. If the form also enforces a byte limit, enable Target Size in the editor after upload to land under it in the same run, or start from thecompress to 100KB preset page.
All conversion happens locally: the file is decoded and re-encoded with WebAssembly inside your browser, so nothing is sent anywhere. The same applies to every step of themain JPEG compressor.

Often yes — WebP typically saves 25–35% at similar visual quality. Compatibility is the tradeoff: JPEG works everywhere, WebP works in all modern browsers but not every legacy uploader. Keep JPEG for government forms unless they accept WebP.
